This series is an attempt to reinterpret the timeless image of the moon, which has long captivated humanity, through a contemporary sensibility, and to reveal its many diverse expressions.
On Unhada washi paper, I layer sumi ink, gofun, gold and silver pigments, metallic leaf, and mineral pigments—grounded in the materials and techniques of traditional Japanese painting—while fusing them with modern composition and expressions of light. The moon, as it waxes and wanes, quietly plays its own music.
I have conceived of that resonance as a “score,” inscribing it in each work as though recording its melody.
The shifting rhythm of light and shadow is entrusted to ink and gold and silver leaf, brought forth on the surface of the painting.
I will continue to broaden the “Gekkafu” series, capturing ever new expressions of the moon as it reveals itself.
